Saturday December 17th, 2011 // Half Moon Bay

Join Break Through the Static for our First Annual Break Through the Ice! event on the beach in Half Moon Bay! Registration – Are you a Plunger or a Chicken?

Break Through the Ice! is for everyone! Even if you don’t want to go in the 45 degree Pacific (who wouldn’t?!?!?) you can still join a fundraising team, raise donations, and attend this super fun event.

Plunge Waiver | Final

Plunge Registration Form | Final

Download, print, fill out, and submit the registration form + waiver. You may email the forms to or bring them to the event. Everyone must submit these forms in order to participate in the plunge.

2 Ways to Participate:
1) Be a Plunger! Get down with your daredevil self and take the plunge in the mighty Pacific Ocean.
2) Be a Chicken – ba-gawk! Too chicken to plunge? Prefer to keep your feet on dry land? Fine with us! We just hope you’ll show up in costume.

High School Students –

  • Every Plunger or Chicken (all event participants) will be on a Team. This will be the team you fundraise with, you plunge with, and more!
  • To get registered as a team you must first decide who will be the Team Captain (maximum 10 people per team).
  • The Team Captain will:
    • Register your team with Static
    • Set up your team webpage on razoo. You will need a team name, and a team photo or logo for this step.
    • Make sure all team members meet their fundraising minimums – $100 / person
  • Pick out your team’s costume theme! Get together with your team, go through your old Halloween costumes and dress-up clothes and start brainstorming your team’s costume theme! Think Where’s Waldo, The Many Sides of Lady Gaga, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Disney Princesses, etc. Go all out! Best team costume will be awarded a prize.
  • Want to join an existing team at your school? Feel free to talk with your school’s Static student representative (aka member of Static’s Teen Advisory Board) to find out how to join a team. To see who the Static rep at your school is, visit the Teen Advisory Board page on Static’s website. If your school doesn’t have a Static rep, email Anna Klassen (Static Intern) at She will get you going with a team right away!
  • We also encourage teachers, school counselors, club faculty advisors and other school employees to participate! Interested? Either follow the steps above or contact Anna (Static’s Intern) at

Families -

Families can participate too! Watch your mom, uncle, cousins, and even grandpa jump into the ice cold water. Maybe you can make a Christmas photo out of it – imagine that!
  • Step 1: Establish a team name and a team photo to go on your team’s Razoo webpage.
  • Step 2: Fill out a registration form and mail or email it to Static. You can download and print one [here].
  • Step 3: Have fun and feel good raising funds for local Peninsula youth who have been impacted by suicide.
  • Step 4: Plan an outrageous costume theme for your family plunge!
  • Note: Fundraising minimum of $200 is encouraged.

Companies –

Wouldn’t it be fun to see your Boss jump in the Pacific? Here is your chance! Raise $1,000 and your company can take the plunge while the employees watch (or Plunge alongside, up to you!).
  • Step 4: Plan an outrageous costume theme for your company’s plunge!
  • Note: A fundraising minimum of $1,000 is encouraged.

Raising Donations

Each Plunger and Chicken is responsible for raising his/her own donations for the event. And believe it or not, fundraising can be fun and feel really good. Here are some ideas and tips we think are helpful:

  • Start by sending out an email to your family and friends. Click here (Polar Bear Plunge Fundraising Letter) to download a template letter that you can use when sending emails to friends and family, asking them to support your plunge. They can donate with their debit/credit card on your team’s fundraising page on Razoo, give you a check or cash, or send a check to Break Through the Static. If they are donating on your team’s fundraising page on Razoo, don’t forget to ask them to indicate in the comments section of the transaction that the funds are on behalf of your personal Plunge. That way, you get the credit towards your individual fundraising campaign!
  • Don’t forget to email people a couple times; people are busy and sometimes need a couple reminders. Plungers report an increase of over 50% in donations when asking for online pledges.
  • Bring a pledge sheet with you when you are at family gatherings, work events, school functions, and school club meetings. And don’t be afraid to ASK – most people will give if asked. And don’t forget that every donation helps – even the $5, $10, and $25 dollar donations. Or put it on your Christmas List! If family and friends don’t know what to get you, they can make a donation to your Plunge.
  • Use Facebook – put a link to your Polar Plunge Donation Page on your Facebook page, put in your post why you are fundraising for the cause. People feel compelled to give when they know why this cause is important to you.
  • There are lots of restaurants in our community that enjoy holding fundraising events to benefit local nonprofits. Baja Fresh is one business that is known for giving back to the community in this way! Take advantage of this and hold a fundraising event at a local restaurant, bowling alley or ice cream shop with all proceeds benefiting your Plunge
  • Ask your company if they will “match” whatever you raise in donations
